Caravan, motorhome, trailer and van storage: what to look for

How to choose secure storage for a caravan, motorhome, boat, trailer or work van: security, access, insurance requirements and what to check on site.

Many yards and farm sites store caravans, motorhomes, boats, trailers and vans as well as containers. It frees up the drive and can lower your insurance.

Check your insurer's requirements

Some insurers ask for a specific level of site security or a recognised scheme, and some offer a discount for approved storage. Check before you choose a site.

Security that matters

Perimeter fencing, a locked or controlled gate, CCTV and lighting. On your own vehicle, a hitch lock and wheel clamp are standard requirements.

Access

If you use the caravan or van often, you need easy access and hours that suit you. Ask whether you can collect without notice, and how tightly vehicles are parked.

Hardstanding or grass

Hardstanding is better for tyres and access in winter. Grass pitches are cheaper but can get soft.
