Container storage is usually the cheapest lockable space you can rent per square foot. The price depends on a handful of things, and the headline figure isn't always what you'll pay.
What independent yards charge
Across 164 independent sites that publish a price, the cheapest container storage starts at £24 a month, the middle price is £96 and the dearest listed is £280. Smaller sizes pull the low end down; 40ft containers and premium yards sit at the top.
These are the operators' own published prices on Ironkeep, not estimates. Many yards don't publish prices at all, so treat them as a guide and get quotes.
What changes the price
Size. A 20ft container is rarely double the price of a 10ft. Per square foot, bigger is usually cheaper.
Location. Yards near big towns and motorway junctions charge more than farm sites a few miles out. Driving an extra ten minutes can save a lot over a year.
Access. 24-hour keypad access costs more than set opening hours. Drive-up access to the doors is standard on most yards.
Security. CCTV, lighting, alarms and staffed sites cost more to run.
VAT, insurance and deposits. Business-focused yards often quote plus VAT. Most require insurance, either theirs (a few pounds a week) or proof of your own. Some take a deposit or a month in advance.
How to get the best price
Ask for the monthly price including VAT and insurance, ask whether there's a discount for paying quarterly or for a longer term, and compare at least three yards within a reasonable drive. Then find container storage near you.
Common questions
Is container storage cheaper than self storage?
Usually yes, per square foot, because there's no building to heat, light or staff. You give up some protection from damp and temperature.
Do container storage prices include VAT?
Not always. Yards aimed at businesses often quote plus VAT. Always ask for the all-in figure.
Can I rent a container for just a month?
Most yards let on rolling monthly terms with a month's notice. A few have a minimum term.
